Songs, Stories & Scripture

Join us at 7pm on Palm Sunday, April 13th, at the cross for an evening devotional service. We will be outside at the top of the trail behind the church. Dress warmly and wear your walking shoes. We’ll sing the songs of salvation, listen to the stories of changed lives, reflect on the Scripture and seek the Savior while remembering the journey that began this day for Jesus as he entered the week that led to the cross. From shouts of “Hosanna!” to cries of “Crucify!”, from the waving of palm branches on the streets to the nailing of his palms to the cross, this is where Passion Week begins. Let’s remember his journey together as we gather at the foot of the cross.

People are Screwy

I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame.” -St. Paul (Philippians 3:18-19)

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.” -St. Paul (1 Timothy 1:15)

People are screwy. We’re a mixed bag of nuts, a ragtag lot of misfits. Don’t let anyone fool you. That person who you think has it all together is just as wacky as the oddball on the street who is mumbling craziness to himself and shouting at people who pass by. Sure, it may not be as obvious. Your friend may keep his craziness in check, but it’s still in there. At the wrong moment, it could sneak out and shock you when you least expect it. I used to eat lunch once a week with a homeless guy in DC. We would sit on the sidewalk in front of the Mayflower Hotel. I’d have a Big Mac or a Quarter Pounder. He always had a Filet-O-Fish, a large fry, a coke and an apple pie. Trust me when I say he had more than one screw loose. He loved to randomly yell at people who walked by, particularly women. It was embarrassing.

The Mayor of DC back in those days was Marion Barry. The mayor was arrested on September 18, 1991, at the Vista International Hotel in downtown DC for smoking crack with an undercover informant for the FBI.

I won’t mention what led President Clinton down the road to his ultimate impeachment back in the 90’s, but let’s just say from the White House to the crack house to the sidewalks outside, it doesn’t matter if you're homeless or living in the most famous house in the world; people are screwy!

The same apostle who wrote that there are many who take glory in their shame also wrote that he himself was the worst of sinners. He wrote of those whose god is their stomach; in other words, they live for their appetites, but he also wrote of himself, “I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.” It doesn’t matter who you are. From the most prominent of the saints to the worst of sinners, the whole lot of us, all over the world, we are a rag-tag group of misfits, a mixed bag of nuts. In the words of Ishmael from Moby Dick:

“Heaven have mercy on us all – Presbyterians and Pagans alike – for we are all somehow dreadfully cracked about the head, and sadly need mending."

Ain't that the truth!

We all, everyone of us, desperately need a savior. And the good news is, we have one.
